Protein Diet for Weight Loss: it’s not just about eating bacon!

Who doesn’t love bacon? I could eat bacon with anything! I love the smell, the texture and the taste! So when I finally decided to go on a diet to lose some of the baby weight, I obviously picked a high protein diet to attain my weight loss goals. Why not? As long as I could still eat bacon, I figured I’d be OK!
There are many studies that have been conducted on the benefits of a high protein diet for weight loss. These studies agree with the fact that a high protein diet can help you lose weight. For a while now most of the emphasis has been on low carbohydrates diet as the best way to lose weight. Of course carbohydrates and fats are the most responsible for weight gain in any diet and a reduction of the same should lead to a reduction of weight. Of course you still need to eat to stay healthy and proteins are a very good alternative.
Studies have shown that when the fat and carbohydrates are reduced in a diet and proteins increased, a person will feel more satisfied, less frequently hungry and they will also lose weight. Switching to a high protein diet leads to less calorie intake while you remain satisfied. High protein diet has also been shown to enhance the burning of fat deposits while improving blood lipid levels. People on high protein diets have better control of their appetites and are thus able to avoid excessive calorie intake that can come as a result of binge eating or eating too frequently. But not all proteins are created equal!

A high protein diet helps reduce body fat and maintain lean tissue because the fats will be burned to produce body fuel without the person on diet feeling constant hunger. It is also postulated that the high protein diet results in the production of lower levels of appetite-stimulating hormones thus reducing the appetite of dieters. There is a wide range of recommended protein intake in any diet. Anywhere between 10%-35% of total calorie intake is considered good. This translates to higher protein levels than the recommended dietary allowance of proteins in the diet of a normal, healthy adult.
A high protein diet for weight loss has been shown to improve glucose and insulin homeostasis. The amino acids from protein metabolism interact with glucose metabolism as carbon substrates. Proteins therefore stabilize blood glucose during non absorptive periods. Having a steady blood glucose level will reduce the urge to eat all the time. The best way to go about it is to eat four or five meals and snacks per day. This will ensure that you don’t get hungry in between and disrupt your program by eating what was not part of your plan.
